The canton of Río Blanco is a municipality in the Department of Potosí in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The Cantón Río Blanco is one of seventeen cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Cotagaita in the province of Nor Chichas . It borders the province of Antonio Quijarro to the north and west , the canton Quechisla to the southwest , the canton Sagrario to the south, the canton Cotagaita to the southeast , the canton Vichacla to the east, and the canton Toropalca to the northeast .
The canton stretches between about 20 ° 26 'and 20 ° 54' south latitude and 65 ° 48 'and 66 ° 15' west longitude, it measures from north to south up to 45 kilometers, from west to east up to 40 kilometers. There are 32 municipalities in the canton, the central place is Mocko Pata (Río Blanco) in the south-eastern part of the canton with 113 inhabitants ( 2001 ), the largest town is the mining settlement Tasna Rosario with 1,243 inhabitants in the western part of the canton. The canton is located at an average altitude of around 4000 m .

The canton of Río Blanco takes its name from the river Río Blanco , which forms the upper reaches of the Río Cotagaita . The canton is located on the southeast edge of the Bolivian Altiplano between the Cordillera de Chichas and the Cordillera de Lípez to the south . The climate in the region is a typical daytime climate , in which the mean temperature differences between day and night are more pronounced than between the seasons.
The mean annual temperature in the canton is 6 ° C (see climate diagram Tasna Rosario), the monthly values fluctuate between 2 ° C in June / July and 8 to 9 ° C in the summer months from November to March. The annual precipitation reaches only 200 mm, and while there is almost no precipitation for seven months, the summer precipitation with monthly values between 20 and 50 mm is hardly sufficient for significant plant growth - also due to the altitude.
