The Municipio Cotagaita is a district in the Department of Potosí in the South American Andean state of Bolivia . Its origin goes back to a decree of August 26, 1863.

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Cotagaita is one of two municipalities in the province of Nor Chichas . It borders in the north with the province of José María Linares , in the west with the province Antonio Quijarro , in the south with the province Sur Chichas , in the southeast with the department Chuquisaca , and in the northeast with the municipality Vitichi . It extends over 100 kilometers in an east-west direction and over 150 kilometers in a north-south direction.

The central place of the municipality is the provincial capital Santiago de Cotagaita with 3,931 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the central part of the district.

The municipality of Cotagaita is located in the southern part of the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano . The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal fluctuations.
