Tumusla is a town in the Potosí Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Tumusla is the central place of the canton Tumusla in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Cotagaita in the province of Nor Chichas . The village is located at an altitude of 2620  m on the right, southern bank of the Río Tumusla , which flows over the Río San Juan del Oro to the Río Pilcomayo .

Tumusla lies between the ridges of the Cordillera de Chichas and the Cordillera Central , which rise from the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano . The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal fluctuations.

The annual average temperature is 13 ° C and fluctuates only slightly between 10 ° C in June / July and a good 15 ° C from November to March (see Vitichi climate diagram). The annual precipitation is only about 400 mm, with a very pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 20 mm and a humidity period from December to February with about 80 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

Vitichi is located 172 kilometers by road south of Potosí , the capital of the department.

From Potosí, the paved road Ruta 1 leads from Lake Titicaca in the north to the Argentine border in the south and crosses the cities of El Alto , Oruro and Potosí . From Potosí it leads over 37 kilometers in a southerly direction to Cuchu Ingenio , where the route 14 branches off in a southerly direction and via Vitichi after another 135 kilometers it reaches Tumusla . It then continues via Cotagaita to Villazón .

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Cotagaita 96 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
