Chancellor (grape variety)

Leaves and grapes of the Kanzler grape variety

As Chancellor refers to a rare (only in Germany , especially in the Near Attached) white wine , from the fruity, high-quality wines are produced.

The variety was bred by Georg Scheu in 1927 at the State Institute for Vine Breeding in Alzey from a cross between Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner . The entry in the list of varieties took place in 1967 and a variety protection has existed since 1987. The information provided by the breeder about the parents of the crosses has since been confirmed by DNA analysis.

In 2007 the vine statistics showed a planted area of 34 hectares in Germany, after 49 hectares were recorded in 2001.

Synonyms: Az 3983

Parentage: Müller-Thurgau × Silvaner

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is only slightly hairy. The green young leaves are spotted bronze (anthocyanin spots).
  • The medium-sized leaves are usually three-lobed. The stem bay is closed. The leaf surface (also called blade) is only slightly blistered.
  • The grape is small to medium in size and moderately dense. The broadly elliptical berries are medium to large in size and yellow-green in color. The aroma of the berry is almost neutral.

The early ripening variety, whose ripening time is only slightly behind that of the Gutedel , is susceptible to powdery mildew and downy mildew . The variety is less susceptible to gray mold rot . The wood ripeness is insufficient and causes poor winter frost hardiness.

Kanzler is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
