The chapel was built in 1873 in the Byzantine arched style, as is common in the Russian Orthodox Church . The Lübeck merchant Nikolaus Johanssen, owner of the Sophienhof estate, had the chapel built by the Riga architect Heinrich Carl Scheel (1829–1909) - based on the model of the Russian churches in the Baltic region, known to him through trade . The Russian church in Baden-Baden also served as a model.

The entrance area of the chapel consists of a vestibule with three open arcades, above which the words “Glory be to God in the height” and “To the hiker to stop” are written. The central building is designed as a clover leaf choir, over which a dome was built. In the middle of the choir stands a baptismal angel on a marble plinth, which Eduard Lürssen created for the chapel.

In 1962 the chapel became the property of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Preetz, which, like the Kiel Mennonites, uses the chapel for services about once a month. Below the chapel on the opposite slope is the mausoleum of the Johanssen family , later built by the son of the architect Scheele .

The chapel is a listed building and is one of the sights of the Schusteracht cycling and hiking trail .
