Hijacking - fear of death… In the violence of pirates is a Danish thriller from 2012. Directed by Tobias Lindholm . The subject of the film is ship piracy in Somalia based on real life.

action

Mikkel, the Danish smutje on board the MV Rozen , is happy that they should soon arrive in Bombai. But the ship is captured by Somali pirates beforehand. Now the Copenhagen-based shipping company that owns the ship is being blackmailed. The negotiations are taken over by the shipping company's managing director, who, however, can be advised by a specialist, as the cultural differences between the negotiating partners are too great. While the Danish businessman is under pressure from all sides to bring the matter to a successful conclusion as soon as possible without the media knowing, the kidnappers have the time and experience on their side. They also make targeted use of the family members of the kidnapped Smutjes. Mikkel is allowed to call his wife and then put the submachine gun in the back of his neck while he is on the phone, so that his message appears even more desperate.

The abductees' everyday life is a constant up and down, at first they are not even allowed to leave their cabin to exit, later they are allowed to fish and take part in a celebration. The lack of a common language also complicates the situation. Only one man, who introduces himself as a translator and claims not to be one of the kidnappers, mediates between the two groups on board. Both in Copenhagen and on the ship, the stress increases immensely and the chef and businessman are in danger of breaking. But ultimately you can agree on a sum. After handing over the money, the kidnappers gradually leave the ship, but one of them wants to steal the chef's gold wedding ring. Mikkel refuses to give up the ring. The English captain intervened and tried to prevent this. The captain is shot dead in a scuffle.

The businessman delivers the sad news to the captain's wife by phone. Mikkel returns to his wife and child in Denmark, but is so severely traumatized that he just sits at the table without a word and stares straight ahead.

production

Director Tobias Lindholm, who also wrote the screenplay, says the hijackings of the Danish cargo ships MV Danica White and MV CEC Future in 2007 and 2008 opened our eyes to a reality he didn't know until then gave.

It was the director's aim, following on from his first film R , to make a realistic film using documentary means. In an interview, he said: “When we recorded it [to R] we produced something that I fell in love with and that I took with me. We call it 'reality rules' and it's a reminder that every time we have doubts about something, we should listen to reality. Everything should be as close as possible to reality and made just as dirty and undramatic as reality is. Reality has certain rules that are not necessarily dramaturgically important, but contain a high degree of poetry and authenticity. ”The part of the film that takes place on the ship was shot in the Indian Ocean on a freighter that was once captured. In addition, the role of kidnapping expert was cast with Gary Skjoldmose Porter, who actually does this job. Another element Lindholm points out was the use of a real satellite phone: “With a satellite phone there are delays, and that's something I love. If there are delays, then at some point you start talking confused. It's identifiable, it's a technical challenge, and it's annoying in a fantastic way. "

criticism

Kim Skotte, reviewer of Politiken , gave the film five out of six possible stars and reports that the film has “a sober and exciting drama” and gives the impression that “you are there yourself”. He praised Asbæk's performance and sums up that Lindholm "tried new things and was successful."

The reviewer of the Danish film magazine Ekko , Jesper Bo Petersen, awarded five out of six possible stars. He sees parallels to the film R , because here too normal men, Mikkel and Peter, the shipping company's businessman, got into an extreme situation. The camera work, reminiscent of a documentary, creates a condensed atmosphere. The film shows no external drama, but psychological tension. The topicality of the topic and the thorough research ensured that the film got under your skin.
