Karel Šebor (born August 13, 1843 in Brandeis , † May 18, 1903 in Royal Vineyards , Prague ) was a Czech composer.

Life

His grandfather, a teacher who also raised him, introduced him to music. He attended the Prague Conservatory for the first time when he was twelve, under the direction of Jan Bedřich Kittel. In 1861 he took a position as a music teacher in what was then Russian Poland, in 1863 he was offered the position of theater conductor in Erfurt . He stayed there until 1865 when he was appointed 2nd Kapellmeister of the State Theater in Prague. Five operas written by him were premiered here. In 1871 he left Prague because of disputes with the theater management and took the position of the first conductor in Lviv . Due to unsuccessfulness, he initially applied to be the bandmaster of the military orchestra with the infantry troops in Košice . He stayed in the military for 20 years. Only six months before his death did he return to civilian life and was appointed city music director.
