Life
Karel Purkyně was the son of the physiologist Jan Evangelista Purkyně . He was born in Wroclaw because his father was teaching there at the university at the time. From 1851 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and from 1854 to 1855 went to Munich to attend the private school of Johann Baptist Berdellé . At the end of 1856 he completed a one-year study trip to Paris , where he visited the studio of Thomas Couture , but mainly devoted himself to studying the old masters in the Louvre . Between 1858 and 1862 Purkyně participated regularly in the annual Prague exhibitions. In 1861 he briefly studied with Carl Rahl in Vienna and stayed again in Munich in 1865. From 1862 he also worked as an art critic for Czech and German-language magazines.
Purkyně was buried after his early death at the age of 34 in the Vyšehrad Cemetery (Slavin Cemetery) in Prague.

Karel Purkyně can be regarded as the most important representative of Czech realism . Originally from Romanticism , Purkyně was strongly influenced by French realism. He tried to grasp the essence of things lying behind the surface. Motifs of his painting were especially self-portraits , portraits and still lifes , some in large formats. His personal touch can be seen in the peculiar combination of his realistic conception with romantic reminiscences and in his emphasis on color.
