Karin Böhme-Dürr

Karin Böhme-Dürr (born February 16, 1949 in Erfurt , † June 14, 2004 in Munich ) was a German communications and media scientist. She was a professor and co-founder of communication and media studies at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

Life

Karin Böhme-Dürr was born as the daughter of Werner Böhme and Anna Weiss. On September 29, 1983, she married Alfred Dürr, with whom she had two children. Her tasks at the university and in her research work always included critical observation of the media and their changes.

Career

Karin Böhme-Dürr attended the University of Arizona , where she completed her Master of Arts in Linguistics with the title M.A. (USA) in 1973. In 1975 she received her diploma in psychology from the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 1983 Karin Böhme-Dürr was involved as a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics with a thesis on the development of language awareness. At the Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands she received her PhD. phil. In 1998 she completed her habilitation ( Venia legendi ) in communication and media studies at the University of Leipzig with a thesis on the subject of changing national images with the title: Perspektivenensuche. Germany in US daily newspapers in the period 1976–1995.

In 1980 Böhme-Dürr started as a university assistant at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where she worked until 1989. From 1990 to 1991 she was involved in the German Central Institute for Communication in the field of youth and educational television of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation in Munich and thus received a research grant at the University of California in San Diego . Böhme-Dürr researched and taught at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Humboldt University in Berlin , Leipzig University, Babenberg University, the University of Minnesota (School of Journalism and Mass Communication) and the University of California (Department of Communication) ) and in the German research community at Harvard University (Center of European Studies).

In 1994 she received a professorship at the University of Bamberg in the social sciences department . From 1999 she received a chair for media studies in Düsseldorf at the Heinrich Heine University. She also helped to rebuild the Institute of Social Sciences and its courses. In doing so, she managed to rename the subject Communication and Media Studies .
