The Karische Fritillarie is a perennial herbaceous onion plant that reaches heights of 3 to 15 centimeters. The 4 to 7 (rarely up to 8) leaves are gray-green, lanceolate and usually twisted. They measure up to 7.5 × 1.8 centimeters. There are 1 to 3 flowers . The tepals are 13 to 20 millimeters long. The inner tepals are 8 to 9 millimeters wide, the outer 4 to 7 millimeters.

The flowering time is in April, rarely it lasts until May.

Systematics and occurrence

There are 2 subspecies of the Carian fritillary:

  • Fritillaria carica subsp. carica : The 6 or 7 leaves are narrowly lanceolate. This subspecies occurs in western Turkey and the eastern Aegean in pine forests and on rocks at heights of 200 to 1500 meters. It usually grows on lime.
  • Fritillaria carica subsp. serpentinicola Rix : The 4 or 5 leaves are broadly lanceolate. This subspecies occurs in south-west Turkey. It grows in locations around 1700 meters above sea level together with Pinus and Juniperus . Some authors also regard it as a separate species: Fritillaria serpenticola (Rix) Teksen & Aytaç .

use

The Carian fritillary is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens.
