Karl-Bernhard Gundlach (born January 4, 1926 in Kassel ; † May 28, 2019 ) was a German mathematician and university professor .

Life

Youth, training and promotion

From 1943 to 1945 Gundlach did his military service in the Wehrmacht . From 1945 to 1948 he was a prisoner of war. In the winter semester of 1947/48 he began studying at the University of Durham in England . From 1948 to 1953 Gundlach studied mathematics and physics at the University of Hamburg . He finished his studies in 1953 with a diploma in mathematics.

From 1953 to 1955 Gundlach worked as a research assistant at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . There he received his doctorate in 1954 for Dr. rer. nat. with Hans Petersson . The topic of his doctoral thesis was on the representation of the entire tip shapes to the ideal levels of the Hilbert module group and the estimation of their Fourier coefficients .

Employment

In 1955 Gundlach initially received a grant from the German Research Foundation . From September 1955 to August 1960 he was then a research assistant at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1958 he received his Venia legendi in mathematics there.

From 1960 to 1973 Gundlach taught at the University of Münster. First as a lecturer until 1963, from 1964 as an adjunct professor , then until 1969 as a scientific adviser . In 1969 he was appointed head of the scientific department and full professor.

From May 1973 Gundlach was a full professor of mathematics at the Philipps University of Marburg . During this time in Marburg he held the office of dean in 1975/76, 1982/83 and 1990/91. In 1994 Gundlach retired .

Gundlach mainly dealt with Hilbert's modular forms .
