Karl-Heinz Leven

Karl-Heinz Leven (born April 14, 1959 in Uerdingen ) is a German medical historian . His main research interests are the ancient and Byzantine medical history , the Hippocratic oath , epidemic history , medicine and war and the history of medical ethics .

Live and act

Leven studied medicine, history and classical philology at the University of Bonn and Düsseldorf from 1977 to 1986 . In 1985 he received his license to practice medicine . With the medical history dissertation Medical with Eusebios von Kaisareia , Leven received his doctorate in medicine in 1987 with Hans Schadewaldt at the University of Düsseldorf .

From 1986 to 1987 Leven was a research assistant at the Military History Research Office in Freiburg and then until 1988 at the Düsseldorf University Institute for the History of Medicine .

Since 1988 Leven has worked at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , initially as an assistant to Eduard Seidler , from 1995 to 1999 as a senior assistant to Ulrich Tröhler and then as an academic adviser .

In 1993 Leven completed his habilitation in the history of medicine and on February 1, 2000, he became an adjunct professor at the University of Freiburg.

Since 2009 he has been a full professor for the history of medicine and director of the Institute for the history and ethics of medicine at the University of Erlangen .

On November 23, 2011, Karl-Heinz Leven was elected a member ( matriculation no. 7455 ) of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
