Karl Alfred Lanz (born October 25, 1847 in La Chaux-de-Fonds , † May 1, 1907 in Bern ) was a Swiss painter and sculptor .

Life

Karl Alfred Lanz completed his engraving apprenticeship with J. Häuselmann in Biel and then worked as workshop manager from 1871. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1872 and was a student of the sculptor Max von Widmann . From 1875 to 1877 he was at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and attended an apprenticeship in Jules-Pierre Cavelier's studio. This training was made possible for him through a scholarship .

In 1884 he was able to erect the monument to Guillaume-Henri Dufour in Geneva and after this success received further commissions, among others the Pestalozzi monument in Yverdon-les-Bains in 1890 (for which he also received the gold medal at the world exhibition in Paris in 1889 received), the Isaak Iselin monument in Basel in 1891 and the Heinrich Zschokke monument in Aarau in 1894. Lanz lived in Paris and was one of the most successful sculptors in Switzerland of his time. He created busts of various political personalities, including Emil Welti and Niklaus Leuenberger . He also made architectural sculptures for the Kunstmuseum Bern and the Federal Palace .

The memorial for the victims of a shipwreck on Lake Biel also came from Lanz : The Neptun sank in the summer of 1880 during a thunderstorm with 17 people on board, 15 of whom were killed. Part of the obelisk has been preserved as a well stock of the fountain near Wildermethmatte in Biel. Originally, the memorial had its place in the old cemetery in the dance mats.
