After the undecided battle near Wohlenschwil, Leuenberger signed the Mellinger Peace with Christian Schybi on June 4, 1653 .

After the defeat of the peasants at Herzogenbuchsee in June 1653, he was handed over to Governor Samuel Tribolet and beheaded with the sword on August 27, 1653 in Bern and his body quartered . His head was nailed to the gallows next to the Huttwil Federal Letter, and his body parts exhibited on the four country roads in front of Bern.

On June 7, 1903, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Peasants' War in the Emmental community of Rüderswil, a memorial was erected in honor of Niklaus Leuenberger, which still exists today. This was realized by Karl Alfred Lanz , Cesare Laurenti and the Burgdorf architect B. Christen.
