Karl Altmann (* 1800 in Feuchtwangen ; † January 11, 1861 in Munich ) was a German genre and landscape painter .

Life

Altmann came from a long-established Jewish family. He was one of four children from the second marriage of the antique dealer Joseph Altmann to Edel Altmann, née Fränkel († 1842). Karl Altmann grew up in Ansbach and attended the painting school in Munich before studying at the Dresden Academy from 1819 to 1822 . After a study trip through Italy , he moved to Munich, which was to remain his residence from then on and where he was a member of the Munich Art Association . In May 1832 his parents also moved to Munich. In 1835 Karl Altmann was registered as resident in Dachauer Strasse and in 1845 as resident in Kaufingerstrasse .

Altmann preferred romantic, rural motifs in oil on wood or canvas, but also drew watercolors. Stylistically, he was close to his friend Heinrich Bürkel . His works are u. a. Exhibited in the Münchner Stadtmuseum and in the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus . Pictures of him are among others in the possession of the British royal family.

Although Altmann was offered several positions and awards on condition of changing religion, he remained loyal to Judaism until his death. He remained unmarried.
