Karl Bock (doctor)

Karl Hermann Bock (born May 5, 1922 in Brandis ; † January 7, 2004 in Leipzig ) was a German physician in the field of pediatric cardiology . He taught at the University of Leipzig .

Life

Karl Bock graduated from the König-Albert-Gymnasium in Leipzig at Easter 1940 and began studying medicine at the universities of Jena and Halle (Saale) in the same year . His studies were interrupted by the Second World War and he became a prisoner of war. In 1946 he finally continued his studies at the University of Leipzig. In 1948 he passed the state examination and completed his studies there with the promotion of Doctor of Medicine. The dissertation was entitled gastric ulcer with gastric juice deficiency .

That year, Bock became an assistant doctor at the St. Georg Hospital in Leipzig, where the situation was difficult. There he dealt with childhood diseases, especially with heart diseases in children and infants. He was one of the first doctors to deal with pediatric cardiology.

In 1951 Bock went to the children's clinic at the University of Leipzig and began his training as a specialist. From 1957 he worked as a senior physician at the clinic. Three years later he was at the University of pediatric habilitation and received the instructor . The habilitation thesis was called The Spatial Image of Electrical Excitation Propagation in Congenital Heart Defects and dealt with the diagnosis of congenital heart defects.

Bock was appointed first senior physician and deputy director at the children's clinic in 1963. In 1966 the university appointed him professor with a chair in pediatrics. He was promoted to full professor in 1969. At the beginning of the next decade he founded the Children's Cardiology Working Group of the Society for Pediatrics , of which he remained director for a few years. In 1972 the university made him an honorary Dr. sc. of medicine.

Bock was awarded the Leipzig District Medicine Prize and was medical advisor . In autumn 1988 he retired , gave up the professorship and left the clinic. At the university's request, he continued to volunteer, even though his health deteriorated. Because of his health, he could no longer take part in trips and conferences. In 2004 he died in Leipzig at the age of 81 after his condition had deteriorated significantly in September of the previous year. He had lived in Marienbrunn since 1951 .

Services

Bock was considered an important pediatric cardiologist, so he introduced this subject at the university and in Leipzig. He also organizes national and international conferences on the subject. In doing so, he strengthened international cooperation with regard to pediatric cardiology, which was not easy in the GDR. For example, he took part in a medical congress in Rome . He worked particularly with pediatric cardiologists from Prague and Sofia . In recognition of his achievements, he became an honorary member of the Bulgarian Cardiological Society.

Malformations of the heart and large vessels in Bock's work . Clinic and Therapy from 1971, one of the first works on the subject, he collects the experience of the Leipzig cardiological working group.

Bock combined work in the clinic, research and teaching at the university.
