Karl Dissel (full name: Karl Christian Theodor Dissel , born March 1, 1857 in Korbach , † July 13, 1923 in Hamburg ) was a German philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Karl Dissel, son of the district construction manager Josias Dissel (1822–1909) and Auguste geb. Schnedtler in Korbach in the principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont , attended grammar school in Korbach and after graduating (March 13, 1875) studied classical philology, history and German in Leipzig . After a few semesters, he moved to Göttingen , where he added geography . On November 22, 1879, he passed the teaching qualification and received the license to teach Latin, Greek, German and ancient history in all classes, in middle and modern history and geography in the middle classes.

Even before the teacher training examination, Dissel entered the school service. As a member of the royal educational seminar under the direction of Hermann Sauppe , he taught from October 1, 1879 to September 30, 1880 at the Göttingen grammar school . He completed the following year of probation at the grammar school in Brandenburg an der Havel , where he was promoted from the scientific assistant teacher to 5th collaborator on April 1, 1880 . He found his position in life at the newly founded Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hamburg , where he worked as a senior teacher from October 1, 1882 (from January 1, 1887 as a high school professor). He remained loyal to the grammar school until his retirement (Easter 1922).

In addition to teaching, Dissel was scientifically active. Even from his brief Brandenburg time came his thesis on the myth of Admetus and Alcestis , in which he in 1882 at the University of Halle Dr. phil. received his doctorate . A German translation of the work, which was written in Latin, appeared in the school program of the Brandenburger Gymnasium. During his time in Hamburg, Dissel dealt primarily with the baroque poet Philipp von Zesen (1619–1689) and his work for the written German language. However, he also remained true to his mythological interests and in 1907 published a study on Aeneas' sacrifice on the Ara Pacis .

The journalist Werner Wirths was his nephew, son of his sister Bertha Wirths, born in 1858. Dissel.
