Karl Esmarch

Karl Bernhard Hieronymus Esmarch , pseudonym Karl von Alsen (born December 3, 1824 in Sønderborg , † June 22, 1887 in Prague ) was a German lawyer and professor at the Universities of Cracow and Prague.

Life and professional activity

Esmarch came from an old Schleswig-Holstein pastors and lawyers family and was the son of the later members of Schleswig's States General and the National Assembly in Frankfurt , Heinrich Carl Esmarch and his wife in special castle in the Duchy of Schleswig born.

After attending school, first at the cathedral school in Schleswig and then until Easter 1843 at the Katharineum in Lübeck , Esmarch studied law at the University of Bonn and Heidelberg University . During his student days he was active in several fraternities , in 1844 in the fraternity of Walhalla Heidelberg , in 1845 in the fraternity of Albingia Heidelberg , the fraternity of Albertina Kiel and in the old Berlin fraternity Germania .

In 1845 he came back to Schleswig-Holstein and passed his exam there at the higher court, which he passed with distinction. After completing his doctorate, he volunteered for the army to support the Schleswig-Holstein survey in the fight against Denmark .

After Denmark's victory, Esmarch had to leave Schleswig-Holstein and completed his habilitation in Göttingen as a private lecturer with the text: "Inter moram solvendi et culpam a debitore praestandam, quae sit differentia".

In 1854 Esmarch finally received a call to the University of Krakow and was appointed full professor of Roman law in 1855 . From 1857 he taught in Prague.
