Karl Friedrich Biltz (born July 6, 1830 in Torgau , † December 16, 1901 in Berlin ) was a German literary scholar , playwright and theater critic .

Life

Karl Biltz was the son of the printer and mayor Carl Friedrich Biltz (1796–1855) from Niederneuschönberg and Christiana Mänell (1791–1858). After studying theology and philosophy with subsequent doctorate in Jena in 1864 as Dr. phil. Karl Friedrich Biltz worked temporarily as a high school teacher before devoting himself exclusively to literary studies and writing.

In his treatise on: Who printed the First German Bible in New Contributions to the History of German Language and Literature , Berlin 1891, pp. 67–124, he and Wilhelm Walther , the member of the staff group of the Real Encyclopedia for Protestant Theology and Church, Leipzig 1916, and author of the work The German Bible Translation of the Middle Ages, Braunschweig 1889-1892 , proves that the Mentel Bible, printed by Johannes Mentelin in Strasbourg between 1456 and 1466, was the first German Bible , whereas the first edition had been for a long time Traded Eggesteyn version from around 1470 was only a reprint.

In addition, Biltz owned a valuable collection of old works, which in 1907 was presented and auctioned by Martin Breslauer in a catalog entitled Das Deutsche Lied, Sacred and Secular, up to the 18th century .

Karl Biltz was part of the editorial team of the Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and remained loyal to it in the field of literature and theater criticism until his death. In addition to his dramatic studies, especially about Goethe and other things , he wrote several comedies, antics and dramas himself.

He was personally known to many theater people and writers of his time. In particular, he had a deep friendship with the historian Heinrich von Treitschke .

Karl Biltz was married to Auguste Schlobach (1839-1883), daughter of the surveyor Tobias Schlobach (1798-1854). He had four children with her, including Johann Heinrich Biltz and Eugen Wilhelm Biltz .
