Karl Frommann

Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Frommann (born May 22, 1831 in Jena , † April 22, 1892 there ) was a German medic.

family

Karl Frommann came from an old publishing family. He was born as one of six children of the publisher Friedrich Frommann (1797–1886) and Wilhelme geb. Günther (1811–1877) born. His grandfathers were the publisher and bookseller Carl Friedrich Ernst Frommann (1765–1837) and the Weimar senior consistorial councilor, court and garrison preacher Wilhelm Christoph Günther († 1826). His brother Eduard Frommann (1834–1881) succeeded his father as a publisher. His brother-in-law, husband of his sister Anna (1832–1922), was the theology professor Karl Albrecht Vogel von Frommannshausen (1822–1890).

Life

Karl Frommann studied medicine at the universities of Jena , Göttingen , Prague and Vienna . In 1852 he became a member of the Corps Saxonia Göttingen . In 1854 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. After receiving his license to practice medicine and undertaking a long trip abroad, he became an assistant doctor at the medical clinic of the University of Jena in 1856. From 1858 to 1860 he was a general practitioner at the German Hospital in London . In 1861 he settled in Weimar as a doctor. In 1870 he completed his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg and became a private lecturer in histology. In 1872 he moved to the University of Jena, which appointed him professor in 1875. Until his death he researched mainly the normal and pathological anatomy and histology of the nervous system.

Honors

In 1883 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
