Karl Gustav Berndal , also Carl Gustav Berndal , (born November 2, 1830 in Berlin , † July 30, 1885 in Gastein ) was a German theater actor.

Life

Berndal was accepted as a young 18-year-old student at the court theater in July 1848, but was released the following year. He initially stayed in Berlin and played in the first and oldest lovers' theater in Berlin, the Urania. In April 1851, director Woltersdorf hired him for Königsberg .

In 1852 Berndal went to Stettin , made a guest appearance at the royal theater in Berlin in May 1853 in the subject of youthful heroes and lovers and in May 1854 was engaged for three years, then ten years and in 1866 for life. As early as 1855 Berndal switched to the older subject and after Hendrichs' departure in 1864 he became its representative in the hero roles. In 1857 he gave guest roles in Leipzig and Mannheim , later also in Cologne , Magdeburg , Königsberg etc., with great recognition everywhere.

From 1863 to 1873 he was a lecturer in dramatic lessons and declamation at the Stern Conservatory . From 1873 he also worked as a teacher of declamation at the royal university in Berlin. From 1880 to 1882 he was President of the Cooperative of German Stage Members .

Grave of KG Berndal

In the last years of his life, the voice of Karl Gustav Berndal was so attacked that his playing suffered and he could give his characters fewer nuances. Nevertheless, it came as a surprise when, after only a short period of malaise, he died on July 30, 1885 at the age of 54 while traveling in Gastein.

His grave is in Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Church in Berlin-Kreuzberg . A bronze medallion with the portrait of the dead person in profile, a work by Fritz Thomas, is set in the grave pillar made of red granite with a cross crown.

roll

His sonorous organ, supported by a perfect, unconstrained clarity of pronunciation, was able to adapt to the most varied of situations. Among his best roles in the subject of heroes were Wilhelm Tell , Götz von Berlichingen , Karl Moor , Percy; in the subject of character roles he played the Baron von Burleigh , William of Orange , President v. Walter , and Philip II.
