Karl Hafner (born October 8, 1875 in Graz , † June 23, 1945 there ) was an Austrian archivist and historian .

Life

Karl Hafner was born on October 8, 1875 in the city ​​of Graz, then part of Austria-Hungary . He then studied history and geography at the University of Graz there and completed his studies on June 23, 1905 with the degree of Dr. phil. from. Before that, he worked between 1897 and 1904 as an employee of the State Historical Commission for Styria and, after completing his studies, worked at the Styrian State Archives from 1905 to 1933 . His entry into the archive service as a volunteer is documented in the archive's annual report from 1905. After that he worked as a volunteer in the State Archives free of charge in 1906. In 1907 he was given the third adjunct post created by the Styrian state parliament (in the Xth class of state officials) with legal effect from January 1, 1907, although he was also instructed to take the state archive examination at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna . After he worked as a third adjunct for a few years, he successfully passed the state archive examination in Vienna in 1910. In 1912 there were a number of promotions, with Hafner, who was meanwhile second archival adjunct, also being awarded the title of second archives designer.

After he moved to the IX. In the same year he was appointed a correspondent of the Imperial and Royal Archives Council. Like most of the staff at the Styrian State Archives, Hafner also had to be deployed during the First World War and was initially present in the southern theaters of war before he became a station officer in Bruck an der Mur , among other things . In the same year he was promoted to lieutenant alongside his long-time colleague, the first draftsman Max Doblinger . After he was stationed as a station officer in Bruck an der Mur until May 1917, he came to the Austro-Hungarian Military Command in Graz as a first lieutenant . After the deputy director at the time, Anton Kapper, retired on August 1, 1920 and the previous state archivist Max Doblinger took over in his place , Karl Hafner, who had been an archivist up to this point, took over the office of state archivist. On January 1, 1923, Viktor Theiss followed as a candidate for the position of a draftsman . With legal effect from July 1, 1929, Hafner was appointed senior archivist in the 3rd class.

Between 1910 and 1913 he also appeared as co-editor of the papers on the history and local history of the Alpine countries in Graz. From 1923 to 1945 he was a board member of the Styrian Singers' Association , for which he set up a valuable archive that also included Styrian music history. However, the archive perished after Hafner's death in 1945. In 1938 Hafner was acting director of the Association of German Historians in Graz and then appeared as chairman of this association. Hafner died on June 23, 1945 at the age of 69 in his native Graz. Hafner's estate, who was a member of the Gothia Graz student association , is now in the Styrian State Archives.
