from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Doblinger (born September 18, 1873 in Perg , † August 15, 1965 in Aschach an der Donau ) was an Austrian archivist , historian and numismatist . He was an official in the Styrian State Archives , from 1923 to 1933 as its director.

Life

Doblinger was born the son of a lawyer and grew up in Perg. The move to Linz enabled him to attend the Academic Gymnasium in Linz. He passed his Matura in 1894 at the humanistic grammar school in Ried im Innkreis , because he had to leave the school in Linz because of his membership in a prohibited student association . One of the teachers was Hans Commenda . He completed his one-year volunteer year in 1895 with the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger No. 4 stationed in Linz , where he became lieutenant in the reserve in 1897 . He took part in weapons exercises in Bohemia , Istria and Cattaro .

From 1895 he studied history and geography at the University of Graz and received his doctorate there in 1901, as his father did before in 1861 . His teachers included Franz von Krones , Hans von Zwiedineck-Südhorst , Adolf Bauer , Eduard Richter , Martin Wutte and Johann Loserth . Study colleagues were Otto Jauker , Viktor von Geramb and Hans Pirchegger .

He spent his free time with the Frankonia academic fraternity , where he met Paul Wentzcke and Herman Haupt . During his studies in Graz, Doblinger converted to Protestantism , which subsequently determined his career path, as the opportunities open to him had been drastically limited.

Expertise was expanded at the University of Leipzig with Friedrich Ratzel , Gerhard Seeliger and Erich Marcks and at the Austrian Institute for Historical Research at the University of Vienna with Engelbert Mühlbacher , Oswald Redlich , Josef von Zahn , Wilhelm Erben , Alfred Dopsch , Franz Wickhoff . Study colleagues were Ignaz Zibermayr and Heinrich Ritter von Srbik .

In 1903 Doblinger married Paula Kaltenbrunner, the daughter of a lawyer from Eferding . His daughter was born in 1905.

His professional career began in 1903 thanks to the intercession of friends and teachers in Graz for 1¼ years as an unpaid volunteer at the Styrian State Archives in Graz. In 1904 he became archive aspirant , in 1906 archive adjunct , and in 1912 conceptionist first class.

His professional activity was interrupted by the First World War, where he served as a lieutenant , was seriously wounded at the Lupków tunnel in the Carpathian Mountains and was captured by the Russians . Before the end of the war, and especially before the October Revolution, he got back home thanks to fortunate circumstances, where he relaxed with his family in Eferding and was finally able to resume his work in Graz.

In 1920 he became deputy director of the Styrian State Archives, having previously been appointed State Archives. Also in 1920 he became a member of the Historical State Commission for Styria , of which he was a member until 1951. In 1923 he succeeded Anton Mell (brother of the historian Alexander Mell ) as director of the Styrian State Archives and in this function was appointed court advisor in 1932 . On May 31, 1933, he retired a little early and moved to his family's home in Aschach.

Personally, he increasingly integrated himself into the Protestant parish, where he became a parish representative from 1926, presbyter from 1927 and deputy curator in 1932 , positions which he only resigned when he moved to Aschach.

During his professional activity he lived in Graz . He combined his research activities with extensive hikes and trips. He spent his old age in his house in Aschach an der Donau.
