Karl Horatz

Karl Horatz (born January 14, 1913 in Cologne , † May 16, 1996 in Hamburg ) was a German anesthetist, intensive care physician and university professor. He was a pioneer in German anesthesiology.

Life

Horatz began studying medicine at the Albertus University in Königsberg and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1934 he became a member of the Corps Bavaria Munich . He passed the state examination in 1938 at the University of Cologne , which also made him a Dr. med. PhD . He began his medical training with Heinrich Otto Kalk in Berlin. During the Second World War he was a military doctor in the Air Force (Wehrmacht) . In the post-war period he completed his surgical training with Georg Ernst Konjetzny and Albert Lezius at the University Clinic Hamburg-Eppendorf . Since 1947 he was particularly interested in anesthesiology. He conducted experimental and clinical research on hypothermia and anesthesia for cardiac surgery, which was also just emerging . The collaboration with Ludwig Zukschwerdt brought great progress and developed into personal friendship. Habilitated since 1957 , Horatz was appointed head of the department of anesthesiology at the Surgical University Clinic and Polyclinic Hamburg in 1960. In 1963 he was appointed associate professor . On January 1, 1966, he was appointed to the first German chair for anesthesiology by the University of Hamburg .

On April 10, 1953, Horatz was one of the founders of the German Society for Anesthesia in the Deutsches Museum . He later initiated its renaming to the German Society for Anesthesia and Resuscitation . He operated the separation of the professional association of German anesthesiologists from the specialist society in September 1961. Manfred Doehn and Peter Lawin belong to his students . Lawin became a pioneer and “pope” of intensive care medicine at the Altona General Hospital and at the Münster University Hospital .
