Karl Josef Anton Leodegar von Bachmann (born December 3, 1734 in Näfels , † September 3, 1792 in Paris ) was a Swiss soldier in French service.

His parents were the officer in the Swiss Guard Karl Leonhard von Bachmann (* February 22, 1683; † October 15, 1749) and his wife Elisabeth Keller , the daughter of Anton Leodegar Keller, also an officer in the French service. Niklaus Franz von Bachmann was his brother.

Life

He came into French service as a cadet in 1749, after which he became Ensigne in his father's company in the Regiment de Castella, where he was promoted to captain of the grenadiers until 1750 . In 1756 he became the owner of two companies in the Regiment de Castella and in 1762 a major in the Regiment Waldner von Freundstein. In 1764 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel in the regiment of the Swiss Guard and in 1768 Brigadier des armes du roi . In 1778 he received the Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis and in 1780 he was promoted to Maréchal de camp .

In 1792 he became the owner of a company of the Swiss Guard , which had defended the Palais des Tuileries in Paris in 1792 , he was sentenced to death and guillotined for this . His name is listed second on the Lion Monument in Lucerne . With the Tuileries storm, the Swiss guards regiment went down in France, at the beginning and the end of which were Glarus officers.

family

In 1756 he married Maria Anna Josefa Antonia Freuler , a daughter of Johann Jodocus Fridolin Freuler . The couple had three sons. The youngest died as a Russian major in the battle near Näfels on May 26, 1799, the middle one died as a captain in British service in 1804, the oldest died unmarried in 1828.
