Karl Keller-Tarnuzzer

Karl Keller-Tarnuzzer (born December 12, 1891 in Landau in the Palatinate , † April 3, 1973 in Frauenfeld ; resident in Gelterkinden ) was a Swiss teacher and amateur archaeologist .

life and work

Karl Keller was the son of a Rhineland cellar master . When he died, his mother, who came from the canton of Basel-Landschaft , returned to Switzerland with the children. Keller studied at the Muristalden teacher training college from 1908 to 1911 and then taught in Köniz . In 1911 he acquired Swiss citizenship. At the Bündner Kantonsschule , Keller met the natural scientist Christian Tarnuzzer. This encouraged him to do scientific research. In 1920 he married his daughter Kate Tarnuzzer.

In 1923, Keller volunteered to be the curator of the prehistoric and early historical collection of the newly founded "Luzernerhaus" nature museum in Frauenfeld and a cantonal archaeologist on behalf of the Thurgau Museum Society . Keller worked as a conservator for the canton of Thurgau from 1958 to 1964.

Keller dealt with archaeological finds in Thurgau and published a prehistory of Thurgau in 1925 together with Hans Reinerth . For young readers Keller wrote Pfahlbauer -narrative The island people from Lake Constance . The book saw several new editions. In 1928, the Swiss Society for Prehistory chose Keller as its secretary. He held this office until 1956.

Keller organized prehistoric courses and was involved in extensive archaeological excavations. For example in Castaneda , near the prehistoric lakeside settlement Breitenloh-Pfyner in Arbon and west of Frauenfeld near the moor settlement Gachnang / Niederwil -Egelsee. With his research, Keller shaped Swiss prehistory and early history.

When Keller suffered a stroke in 1962 , he had to give up his archaeological activities. Keller was an honorary citizen of Castaneda GR .
