Karl Möckel
Karl Ernst Möckel (born January 9, 1901 in Klingenthal / Sa. , † January 24, 1948 in Cracow ) was a German SS-Oberführer , head of the site administration in Auschwitz concentration camp and head of office group W III in the SS Economic and Administrative Main Office ( WVHA).
Life
Karl Möckel, son of a customs secretary, ended his school career in 1919 after attending elementary , secondary and upper secondary schools . From the spring of 1919 to August 1921 Möckel worked in agriculture and then completed an apprenticeship at the State Tax Office in Leipzig by the end of December 1925. Möckel then worked as a book auditor for an auditor in Chemnitz .
Möckel was a member of the SA from 1924 . From November 26, 1925, he belonged to the NSDAP ( membership number 22.293) and on December 24, 1926, he switched from the SA to the SS (SS number 908). In April 1939 Möckel rose to the position of SS-Oberführer in the general SS. Möckel was awarded the NSDAP's golden party badge .
On October 1, 1933 Möckel became a full-time employee of the SS in the SS administration office and from November 1935 was an SS leader on the staff of Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler . From November 1933 to April 1939 Möckel held various positions in the SS administration, such as head of the examination office at the SS available troops and at the SS main office.
From April 20, 1939 Möckel was head of office in the main office for administration and economics , where he was also Oswald Pohl's deputy for a short time . After the establishment of the SS Economic and Administrative Main Office, Möckel was from February 1942 head of Office W III - Food Companies. Möckel's efforts to get a job in the private sector were unsuccessful. In mid-August 1942 he was transferred to the Waffen SS and worked as a financial advisor to the SS economist for the Higher SS and Police Leader Ostland. At the beginning of January 1943 Möckel was assigned to the SS Upper Section Baltic Sea, where he became administrative director with the Stettin headquarters .
From April 20, 1943 to January 1945, Möckel was the last head of the site administration at Auschwitz concentration camp and succeeded Wilhelm Burger in this function . The SS member and Erich Mußfeldt , who was employed in the gas chambers and crematoria in Auschwitz-Birkenau , said the following about looted property from the Hungarian transports of Jews after the war: “Möckel came frequently, checked our work and gave orders on the spot to carry out the work , in particular, he drove us to work faster. The sorting station and the management of the sorted out items were subordinate to Möckel as head of the administration ”.
After the evacuation of the camp, Möckel moved in January 1945 to the staff of the Higher SS and Police Leader Odilo Globocnik in Trieste in the Adriatic Coastal Operation Zone and remained in this position until the end of the Second World War .
After the end of the war
After his arrest, Möckel was interned and later extradited to Poland . There Möckel and other suspects were charged in the Kraków Auschwitz trial and sentenced to death by the Supreme National Tribunal of Poland on December 22, 1947 . On 24 January 1948 he was in the Krakow -Montelupich prison with 20 other convicts, including Maria Mandl , by hanging executed .
