Karl Marek (politician, 1860)

Karl Marek (born February 5, 1860 in Eger , Kingdom of Bohemia , † April 21, 1923 in Vienna ) was an Austrian administrative lawyer, finance specialist, banker and finance minister.

Life

Marek graduated from high school in Eger, studied law and political science at the University of Prague , obtained a Dr. jur. and in 1883 entered the civil service in the Pilsen District Administration . After holding positions in the State Finance Directorate in Prague and as a tax inspector in Bukowina , he became Chief Finance Councilor of Graz , where he also taught as a lecturer at the university . In 1912 Hofrat Marek became section head of the monopoly and budget section in the Vienna Ministry of Finance .

In Chernivtsi he had extensively modernized the outdated financial administration of Bukovina. He was an expert in administrative reform , especially in budgetary and accounting, such as the introduction of cashless payment transactions in the Austrian administrative sector. Marek was seen as an unbureaucratic reformer and "brilliant organizer".

From October 31 to December 20, 1916, Marek was Austrian Finance Minister in the Koerber cabinet . Then he was again head of section in the Ministry of Finance. In July 1917 he retired and later served as President of the Allgemeine Depositenbank and in 1920 as President of the Export and Industry Bank. He left two children.
