Karl Matthias Ernst
Karl Matthias Ernst (born February 24, 1758 in Mannheim ; † 1830 , ibid) was a painter and graphic artist from the Electoral Palatinate .
biography
Karl Matthias Ernst attended the Mannheim drawing academy in the early 1770s, where he was a student of the engraver Egid Verhelst and the painter Franz Anton Leitenstorffer .
Due to disputes with Verhelst, he broke off his training in Mannheim after three years and joined the workshop of the engraver Christian von Mechel in Basel . He also stayed there for about three years. After a stopover in the county of Mömpelgard , where he made himself known to Montbéliard , at the court of Duke Friedrich Eugen von Württemberg , who then resided there , Ernst returned to Mannheim. Here he studied for another year at the drawing academy and in 1782 won the annual award for best performance.
Due to poor health, Karl Matthias Ernst stayed in Rheinhessen , near Alzey, to recover . From here he came into contact with the Nassau-Weilburgischer Hof in Kirchheimbolanden and became a court draftsman there at the end of 1783. The painter later returned to his hometown Mannheim, where he continued to work as an artist and also gave lessons. He died there in 1830.
In addition to numerous pictures, Ernst also supplied specialist engravings for medical works and made maps. He has remained famous to this day for his widespread portraits of the robber captain Johannes Bückler (Schinderhannes) , his lover Juliana Blasius and people from their environment who were all tried in Mainz in 1802/1803 . Karl Matthias Ernst made portraits of Bückler and other defendants on behalf of the court president Georg Friedrich Rebmann during the main hearing . Several engravings and pictures with their likenesses were made in his workshop in 1803 and were apparently sold in large numbers as copies at that time.
