Career highlights and awards

Karl Bernard Mecklenburg (born September 1, 1960 in Seattle , Washington , USA ) is a former American American football player . Among other things, he played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Denver Broncos .

Player career

The German-born Mecklenburg first played at Augustana College and then moved to the Minnesota Golden Gophers , the University of Minnesota football team . Mecklenburg was signed very late in the 1983 NFL Draft . It was only in the twelfth round that he was pulled by the Broncos in 310th place. This late commitment initially gave him no hope of a great professional career, especially since his head coach Dan Reeves did not initially rely on him and only used him sporadically. It was only in his third year that he became a regular player. Mecklenburg was not only used as a linebacker, but was also used as a defensive line player . He went on to become one of the best defensive players in Denver Broncos history. A Super Bowl victory was denied to him, although his team with the quarterback John Elway moved into the Super Bowl three times. The Super Bowl XXI was lost to the New York Giants at 39:20, the Super Bowl XXII went to the Washington Redskins at 42:10 , with Mecklenburg being able to bring the Redskins' replacement quarterback Jay Schroeder to the ground with a sack , and in the Super Bowl XXIV you had to admit defeat to the San Francisco 49ers with quarterback Joe Montana with 55:10.

Mecklenburg played in Denver until 1994 and played 180 games in the regular season . By capturing two fumbles , he was able to score two touchdowns . Overall, he was able to bring the opposing quarterback to the ground 79.5 times (sack). With this number, he is still second on the Broncos record list. The four sacks he scored in one game are still a club record.

After the career

After his playing career, Mecklenburg trained a high school team . He is socially committed and has his own foundation that supports the upbringing of underprivileged children. Mecklenburg is married and has three children. The devout Christian lives in Lifieton , Colorado .
