Karl Pivec

Karl Pivec (born March 10, 1905 in Vienna , † October 20, 1974 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian historian .

Karl Pivec studied history, art history, German literature and philosophy at the University of Vienna from 1924 to 1931. From 1930 he worked at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in Vienna. In 1931 he received his doctorate in history at the University of Vienna with the work Die Briefsammlung des Gerbert von Aurillac . From 1932 to 1937 he was a research assistant at the Austrian Institute for Historical Research at the University of Vienna. In 1935 he completed his habilitation for the history of the Middle Ages and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Vienna with the work studies and research for the publication of the Codex Udalrici . From 1937 to 1938 Pivec was an assistant at the Austrian Institute for Historical Research at the University of Vienna. From 1935 to 1938 he taught as a private lecturer at the University of Vienna. Since 1938 he was a member of the NSDAP . From 1939 to 1940 he was a non-scheduled adjunct professor for the history of the Middle Ages at the University of Leipzig . From 1940 to 1945 he was a scheduled associate professor for historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Leipzig. From 1941 to 1944 he took part in the Second World War and in 1944 was taken prisoner by the French, where he remained until 1946. In 1946 he was visiting professor for history at the University of Vienna. From 1946 to 1950 he worked as a freelance journalist and casual worker in Vienna. From 1950 to 1974 Pivec taught as a full professor of medieval history at the University of Innsbruck and was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Innsbruck in 1954/55. Werner Maleczek and Hans Eberhard Mayer were among Pivec's academic students in Innsbruck . One of his main research areas was Dietrich von Niem .
