Schweri grew up as a farmer's son in Koblenz, Aargau , and studied law at the University of Zurich . At a miliary ill, he came to the sanatorium on the Schatzalp ; there he recovered with the help of a drug that he himself imported from the USA. After his release, he acquired the Swiss license for Perlon , which he resold after three years for a profit.

1951 Schweri took over the majority of shares in Import- und Grosshandels AG (IGA); this AG had taken over the consumer company Denner in 1946 . He made Denner the first and leading discounter in Switzerland; In 1967 he opened the first discount grocery store in Switzerland in Zurich .

Schweri struggled to achieve his goals, especially with numerous advertising campaigns. Between 1968 and 2001 he launched six popular initiatives against price cartels and monopolies , all of which were either rejected or withdrawn. On the other hand, he was successful with four referenda .

In 1987 the Karl Schweri Family Foundation was established to hold his group together.

At the end of 2000, Karl Schweri handed over management of the entire group to his then 29-year-old grandson, Philippe Gaydoul .

Schweri was married to Antoinette Schweri-Conrad (1923-2013), with her he had four children, including Denise Gaydoul, Philippe's mother.

He found his final resting place with his wife in the Witikon cemetery in Zurich.
