Karl Seemann (1863–1934)

Karl Seemann (born May 17, 1863 in Groß Roge ; † December 1, 1934 in Berlin ) was a German educator and local researcher.

Life

Karl Seemann was the son of the carpenter and farmer Wilhelm Johann Joachim Seemann. Until 1927 he worked as a teacher and deputy principal in Berlin. In addition to his professional activity, he devoted himself intensively to cultivating Low German literature and language and Low German and especially Mecklenburg customs. In 1895 he became a board member of the General Low German Association (eV), the umbrella organization of the local Low German clubs and associations of the entire Low German language area, which at that time comprised about 40 clubs. From 1899 to 1924 he was chairman of the association. In this function he made a contribution to the association in Mecklenburg, which is confirmed by the approximately 100 regional Low German associations established under his leadership. In addition, he was chairman of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Association. There were hardly any poets or writers with whom Seemann did not exchange ideas, such as Hinrich Fehrs , Johann Meyer , Fritz Stavenhagen , Hermann Boßdorf , Felix Stillfried and Helmuth Schröder . In 1930 he was honored for his work with the John Brinckman Prize in Rostock as part of the Low German Homeland Week . One of the last sentences of his speech at this award ceremony was: "We dörben us dei Mudderspraak nich ut'e Seel advised laten, because then gahn ok dei words from us' flat German beings tau green!"

Individual evidence

  1. "We mustn't let our mother tongue tear out of our hearts, because that also means that the roots of our Low German being will perish!"
