Karl Selke

Johann Karl Adolf Selke (* 1836 in Mehlsack ; † 1893 in Wildbad ) was a German municipal official.

Life

Coming from Luckenwalde , Selke was elected Lord Mayor of Elbing for 12 years on January 22nd, 1869 . As a reserve officer he took part in the Franco-German War . From 1874 to 1893 he was Lord Mayor of Königsberg (Prussia) . He promoted the sewage system , water supply , gas station and elementary school system and put the financial budget in order. From 1888 he represented East Prussia's provincial capital in the "OB faction" of the Prussian manor house .

His oil painting by Arthur Weiß (* 1866) adorned the Junkersaal in the old town of Junkerhof, where the city council of Königsberg met. The city named a school after Selke, in which his portrait hung, painted by Alexander Kolde . In 1897 the street from Korinthendamm to Tamnau-Straße was named after him.

Selke was also involved as a writer and freemason . Lothar Selke was a grandson .
