Karl Sewart

Karl Sewart (born December 27, 1933 in Annaberg ; † January 2, 2019 ) was a German writer .

Live and act

Sewart grew up in Großolbersdorf as the son of a teacher and a hosiery woman. After graduating from high school in Zschopau in 1952, he first studied professional education and natural sciences in Gotha and then graduated as an art teacher in Erfurt . Then he was a teacher in Leuna , Merseburg , Großolbersdorf and Drebach . After studying at the Leipzig Institute for Literature , he started working as a freelance writer in 1973.

He mainly dealt with literature related to the Erzgebirge , such as the game shooter Karl Stülpner and the Erzgebirge Christmas customs. Based on his story Gambit , the DEFA film I force you to live was made in 1977 with Rolf Ludwig , Peter Welz and Elsa Grube-Deister , directed by Ralf Kirsten . He tells of a teacher who, in the last days of the war in 1945, wanted to save his 14-year-old son from a "heroic death" by force.

Sewart last lived in Drebach. He died in early January 2019, a few days after his 85th birthday.

Film adaptations

The story Gambit was made into a film by Ralf Kirsten in 1978 under the title I force you to live . The short story “The Termination” (also from the book “Gambit”) was filmed in 1983 by Edgar Kaufmann for GDR television.
