Karl "Timpa" Simonsson (* 1919 , † 1992 ) was a Swedish football player . The striker , who made two international appearances for the Swedish national team in the 1940s , played for Jönköpings Södra IF in the Allsvenskan and is the best first division scorer in the club's history at the club, which last played first-class in 1969.

Career

In 1939 Simonsson joined the Jönköpings Södra IF competition team. In the following years he developed into one of the most outstanding player personalities in the club's history. In 1943 he rose with the club in the second division, in which he distinguished himself as a regular goalscorer. With 50 (!) Goals this season in 18 league games, he was instrumental in the 1944/45 season in ensuring that the team won the season without losing points with 92 goals scored. After success through Tidaholms GoIF in the playoffs, the club then rose to the Allsvenskan for the first time.

Simonsson's goal danger led him to international honors in the summer of 1945: on August 26th of that year he made his debut alongside four-time goalscorers Gunnar Gren , two-time successful Arne Nyberg and Henry Carlsson in the national jersey , the friendly against the Finnish national team ended with a 7: 2 success. In the Swedish elite series he was then less successful with his team, the season 1945/46 ended the club together with Halmstads BK on a relegation rank. After the end of the season he still had the opportunity to excel in an international game. In a one-off appearance for the league rivals AIK , he played against the English club Charlton Athletic , the game went down in the annals because of the course of the game and the final result: the English club took a 4-0 lead at halftime, which later became one 7-1 intermediate result was expanded. After Carlsson scored the second goal for AIK in the 68th minute, Simonsson scored his first goal of the game three minutes later. Then the club scored goal by goal - shortly before the end it was left to Simonsson to score the 7-7 equalizer with his third goal. The drawings by journalist Jan-Erik Garland about the course of the game, which were published in the newspaper Dagens Nyheter , became a classic, as did the match, which was described as the “AIK game of all time”.

Although not as dominant as two years earlier, he repeated the season victory with the club one point before Åtvidabergs FF , in the promotion games Ludvika FFI was defeated on two legs. As a center forward, he showed his goal danger in the Allsvenskan in the following years and placed himself among the best shooters on the list of goalscorers. This led to his comeback in the national jersey in 1949, in the 3-3 draw against Norway in October 1949 he was one of the goalscorers alongside Lennart Lindskog and Hasse Jeppson . Until 1951 he was still running for his club in the Allsvenskan, in the five first division seasons he had scored 60 goals in 93 games. While he ranks fifth among the players with the most appearances for the club in the Swedish elite series, he distanced Arne Selmosson , who was successful with 33 goals for Jönköpings Södra IF and with whom he ran together in the Allsvenskan at the beginning of his career, as the second best Protect clearly.
