Karl Sommer (born January 4, 1905 in Braunschweig , † since January 16, 1943 missing in Russia ) was a German painter .

life and work

From 1920 to 1925, Sommer trained as a painter. Among other things, he was a student of Adolf Quensen at the Braunschweig School of Crafts and Applied Arts . He completed his training as a master class student. From 1925 to 1927 he initially worked as a decorative painter for various Brunswick companies. From 1928 to 1930, Sommer was head of the church painting workshop in Hirschberg in the Riesengebirge , before he returned to Braunschweig in 1930 and passed his master craftsman examination as a decorative painter there. Afterwards, Sommer worked freelance. From 1931 to 1934 he was a member of the Lower Saxony Artists Associationand took part in some of his exhibitions, where he was represented with avant-garde works. In 1932 he exhibited together with his wife Hildegard Sommer-Peters in the Braunschweig Municipal Museum . From 1935 to 1943, Sommer was a member of the Braunschweiger Künstlerbund and took part in the exhibitions.

In 1933 he exhibited in the Society of Friends of Young Art founded by Otto Ralfs together with Josef Albers , Rolf Cavael and his wife, among others . From around 1935 onwards, Sommer received numerous public contracts , including decorating the outer wall of the clothing office of the Reich Labor Service in Braunschweig, now the College of Fine Arts , with sgraffiti , which was built according to a design by Hans Bernhard Reichow . In 1936, work on houses in the Lehndorf settlement built by the regime followed . In the same year, Sommer created the mural Everything for Germany in the dining room of the Braunschweigischen Kohlen-Bergwerke (BKB) in Helmstedt (today Energy from Waste ). In 1936/37 he painted the Waggum airport building . In 1938, Sommer made the mural Ostkolonisierung for the newly built regional leadership school of the Hitler Youth "Peter Frieß" in Querum , today part of Braunschweig. The last work was also a sgraffito in 1938 on the new "Air Force Hospital " (today's Braunschweig Municipal Hospital ). In 1943, although already missing, Sommer was represented with works at the first Gau art exhibition in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum .

Sommer has been a soldier since 1940 and has been missing in Russia since January 1943 .

family

On June 14, 1929, Karl Sommer married the painter Hildegard Sommer-Peters (1908–1981) with whom he had two children.
