Karl Stanzl

Karl Stanzl (born October 30, 1916 in Altharzdorf , Austria-Hungary , † in November or early December 1978 in Vienna ) was an Austrian film and television director.

Live and act

Stanzl had studied at the University of Vienna up to his doctorate (Dr. phil.) And then received practical stage training. He then worked as a lecturer for film studies at the Theater Studies Institute at the University of Vienna. In the mid-1950s he made two feature films ( Wiener Herzen , with Karl Paryla , and, with August Rieger , Secret of a Doctor ) and a cultural film ( Gast auf Erden ). Otherwise Stanzl had to be content with the activity of an assistant director for the entire decade (from 1950 to 1960) and was involved in a number of well-known entertainment films such as Kind der Donau (1950), Das Herz einer Frau (1951), König der Manege ( 1954), the last three Willi Forst productions Kaiserjäger , The Unexcused Hour and Vienna, You City of My Dreams, as well as four directors by Axel von Ambesser : Woman in the prime of manhood (1958), The Beautiful Liar , Beeching Arabella and The Good Soldat Schwejk with Heinz Rühmann in the title role.

In 1960, Stanzl went to the ORF , where he was employed as a director of lightweight television films as well as sophisticated literary adaptations (e.g. after Arthur Schnitzler and Ferdinand Raimund ), but also occasionally of entertainment programs (such as the music shows We make music, Black and White and Sing mit mir, play with me ) started. In 1964 he was also responsible for a TV series in which Ernst Waldbrunn embodied the title character, with Don't despair - asking Stangl . The artists who worked with him on television at an early age included Annie Rosar , Michael Heltau , Senta Berger , Paul Hörbiger and all members of the Löwinger stage . With the Televisfilm, Dr. Karl Stanzl also ran his own production company to the end. He was buried on December 14, 1978. His wife Eva Stanzl , née Gruber, who died in January 2016 at the age of 89 , had made a name for herself as a dancer, ice skater, choreographer, educator, theater scholar and film producer.
