The secret of a doctor is a German-Austrian melodrama from 1955 with Hilde Krahl and Ewald Balser in the leading roles. The film, directed by August Rieger and Karl Stanzl , was based on the radio play Rauschgift by Victor Reingruber .

action

The assistant doctor Dr. Gerda Maurer made a decisive mistake during her professional activity and was then brought to court and sentenced to imprisonment. When she has served her time behind bars, she can initially no longer find employment in the profession she has learned and has to make do with a low job in a bar. In an accident, Gerda gets to know the respected surgeon Prof. Stephan Wendlandt, who is impressed with her skills and wants to give her a second chance. The professor ensures that the clearly too harsh court judgment is overturned and makes Dr. Maurer as his personal assistant.

One day morphine recipes are missing in Wendlandt's environment , whereupon Gerda is immediately suspected of having stolen them. Even the professor can no longer believe in Gerda's innocence and turns away from her. Dr. Maurer then goes looking for the perpetrator himself in order to prove her innocence. She finds it in the bar where she once worked. The thief caught then flees, is followed by the police and finally shot. Prof. Wendlandt recognizes his mistake and apologizes to Gerda. Both had fallen in love in the meantime, and now nothing stands in the way of Gerda's personal happiness, in addition to starting a new career.

Reviews

The criticism was very inconsistent about the staging of the two up to then little directing experienced Messrs. Rieger and Stanzl. Dirk Jasper saw a “audience-effective mixture of doctor's melodrama and crime film, which is attractively cast with Hilde Krahl and Ewald Balser”, while the lexicon of international films identified a “fateful story in the manner of magazines” and criticized the “miserable direction”.
