Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Hugo von Redern (born January 28, 1823 in Wansdorf ( Osthavelland district ), † June 25, 1884 in Wiesbaden ) was royal Prussian major general and most recently in command of the Strasbourg fortress .

origin

He came from the Brandenburg nobility of Redern and was the son of the Prussian major Karl von Redern (September 1, 1784 - March 24, 1858) and his first wife Charlotte von Guretzky-Cornitz (January 16, 1793 - August 21 1835). His brothers Ludwig Wilhelm Hermann (1819–1886) and Ernst (1835–1900) became lieutenants general. The half-brother Karl Johann Wilhelm Leopold Ehrenreich (1847–1923), who came from the father's second marriage, rose to become lieutenant general.

Life

He received his education at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Berlin . After graduating, he joined the Kaiser-Alexander-Grenadier-Regiment on August 13, 1842 . He was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on February 11, 1843 and aggregated as Seconde-Lieutenant on May 16, 1844 and assigned to April 14, 1847. During the March Revolution of 1848 he was involved in the street fighting in Berlin, in the same year he fought in the First Schleswig War . From May 1 to October 15, 1849 he was assigned to the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Landwehr Guard Regiment in Berlin. He fought in the street fighting in Iserlohn in 1849 and then took part in the Baden campaign. On October 16, 1849, he was transferred to the 13th Infantry Regiment .

From November 11, 1850 to January 27, 1851 he was posted to the 4th Guards Landwehr Regiment, where he served as an adjutant in the III. Battalion came to Düsseldorf . After his return he was on March 15, 1851 adjutant of the Fusilier Regiment in the 13th Infantry Regiment. On July 20, 1854 he was promoted to Regimental Adjutant and on August 12, 1854 to Premier-Lieutenant. On June 21, 1857 he came as a company commander in the 1st Battalion of the 13th Infantry Regiment, from there he was assigned to the 7th Combined Reserve Battalion on May 1, 1858. On July 12, 1858, he was promoted to captain. From March 15, 1859 to February 23, 1863 he was adjutant for the inspection of the garrison of Mainz and Rastatt , after which he was transferred to the 60th Infantry Regiment as a company commander on February 23, 1863 . During the German-Danish War of 1864 he fought near Wielhoi and Missunde . His right humerus was shot to pieces during the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen . Then he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords . After the war he joined the 24th Infantry Regiment as a major on February 11, 1865. During the German War of 1866 he was the leader of the Landwehr Battalion Havelberg, after which he joined the 78th Infantry Regiment on October 30, 1866. On November 5, 1866 he was appointed battalion leader there. On September 25, 1867 he came to the 94th Infantry Regiment, where he was appointed commander of the fusilier battalion and on March 22, 1868 was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

During the mobilization for the Franco-Prussian War he was appointed commander of the 96th Infantry Regiment on July 18, 1870. During the campaign he fought in the Battle of Beaumont . When Paris was enclosed, he earned the Iron Cross 2nd class . On January 18, 1871, he was promoted to colonel and on April 8, 1871, he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class . On March 29, 1871, he was appointed commander of the 96th Infantry Regiment for the peace relationship.

Since his war wound made him more and more troubled, he came to Strasbourg fortress on October 16, 1875 as a commandant and was placed à la suite of the regiment. On January 9, 1875, he was given the character of major general and was put up for disposal with a pension . In addition, he received the Order of the Red Eagle 3rd Class with Swords on January 17, 1875 . He died in Wiesbaden on June 25, 1884.

Redern married Freiin Friederike Luise Karoline von Ziegesar (born December 14, 1844 - July 23, 1901) in Drackendorf near Jena on June 12, 1869 , a daughter of Baron Ferdinand von Ziegesar, the Grand Ducal Saxon Chamberlain (born January 4, 1812; † September 14, 1854), director of the Weimar court theater.
