Life

Zerbes family moved from Berlin to France in 1904. He attended elementary school in Paris. In 1914 they moved to Frankfurt am Main and Zerbe studied chemistry in 1920 at the Technical University in Friedberg . From 1923 he studied painting at the Debschitz School in Munich under Josef Eberz .

In 1931 he and other painters founded an exhibition group that became known as the Seven Munich Painters . The association included Albert Burkart , Franz Doll , Günther Graßmann , Wilhelm Maxon , Otto Nückel and Walter Schulz-Matan , who first appeared publicly in 1931 in the Munich Municipal Gallery in the Lenbachhaus . Until the final dissolution of the German Association of Artists (DKB) by the National Socialist Reich Chamber of Art , Zerbe was also a member. One last entry by Karl Zerbe in the list of full members of the DKB can be found in the list from 1936. However, when the National Socialists came to power, their artistic possibilities were systematically restricted. Their last joint public appearance took place in the summer of 1937.

Zerbe became famous in 1932 for his oil painting Herbstgarten (Autumn Garden). This work was acquired by the National Gallery , Berlin. In 1937 it was designated as " degenerate art " by the National Socialists and destroyed. In 1934 he left Germany. Zerbe had a Jewish background. From 1937 to 1955, Karl Zerbe was head of the painting department at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He became a US citizen in 1939.
