Otto Nückel
Eduard Otto Nückel (born September 6, 1888 in Cologne ; † November 12, 1955 there ) was a German painter , graphic artist , illustrator and caricaturist .
Life
After aborting medical studies in Freiburg im Breisgau , he moved to Munich to further develop his passion for drawing and painting , which had existed since childhood. He lived in Munich until shortly before his death. He was a member of the Munich Secession Artists' Association . His entire work is dominated by the bizarre and a profound irony that goes as far as biting sarcasm. The influence of the anatomy courses during his student days in Freiburg can be felt.
Nückel was a member of the artists' association 7 Munich painters . Albert Burkart , Franz Doll , Günther Graßmann , Wilhelm Maxon , Walter Schulz-Matan as well as Karl Zerbe and Erwin Henning also belonged to this artists' association . The association existed between 1930 and 1937.
He was one of the first to work with lead cutting and developed this art form to the highest mastery. He caused a sensation primarily with his book Fate. A story in pictures (Delphin Verlag, Munich, 1930). Here a woman's path through life and suffering is told as a gloomy, socially critical study only in lead cuts, without any text. In 2005 a new edition of this wordless picture story appeared in France under the title Destin (Éditions IMHO, Paris).
Nückel's series of studio visits from Bosch to Ensor became famous . Nückel earned his living as an illustrator and caricaturist. He made contributions to the satirical magazines Simplicissimus and Der Simpl , the weekly Jugend and the children's magazine Ping-Pong.
Nückel last lived in Overath-Immekeppel . He was not married and died at the age of 67 in Cologne University Hospital .
