Walter Schulz-Matan

Walter Schulz-Matan (born September 23, 1889 in Apolda ; † September 5, 1965 in Schiers , Switzerland) was a German painter of magical realism .

Life

Walter Schulz-Matan from Thuringia led a wandering life across Europe after completing his training as a decorative painter. In 1913/14 he received a brief apprenticeship with Julius Diez at the Munich School of Applied Arts , but was an autodidact . After serving in the war and being a prisoner of war in the First World War, he lived in Munich from 1919, had his first studio in Munich-Schwabing from 1920 and worked as a stage painter for the “ New Stage ” under Eugen Felber, where he also became acquainted with Oskar Maria Graf and Georg Schrimpf could make, the most important representative of the New Objectivity .

In 1927/28 he stayed in Paris. From 1930 he was one of the co-founders of the exhibition group 7 Munich painters and was able to show five works in their first group exhibition in the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus (May 5 to June 3, 1931), including The Blue House from 1927. As early as 1924, the Lenbachgalerie bought a work self-portrait . The exhibition community, which also included Albert Burkart , Franz Doll , Günther Graßmann , Wilhelm Maxon , Otto Nückel and Karl Zerbe , was primarily used for self-marketing. Schulz-Matan was also a member of the New Secession and the German Association of Artists .

In the art movement of New Objectivity, Schulz-Matan developed his own artistic specificity in the current of magical realism . During the Second World War he worked as a war painter in France, then again as an artist in Munich.

The small town of Seewis in the Canton of Graubünden was a frequent place of residence and second home for the artist. After the Matan corridor above Seewis, Walter Schulz called himself "Schulz-Matan" since 1923.
