Life

He came from the Thuringian noble family von Geusau and was born as the son of the general of the Swabian imperial circle Justus von Geusau and Maria von Schütz. He began a military career in the Netherlands and became a colonel and commandant of the Breda fortress .

In 1795 he entered the service of the Margrave of Baden , Karl Friedrich , as a real secret councilor . He was entrusted with diplomatic missions. So he negotiated with the Bavarian Minister Montgelas about the takeover of the Electoral Palatinate, whereby he was unsuccessful with regard to the debt settlement.

In February 1806, Geusau and Reitzenstein asked for the hand of Napoleon's adoptive daughter Stéphanie de Beauharnais in Paris on behalf of the Hereditary Prince Karl of Baden . Both also negotiated the marriage contract with Géraud Christophe Michel Duroc . Geusau was a member of the Baden delegation at the wedding on April 7, 1806.

On March 7, 1808, Geusau was appointed General of the Cavalry and Minister of War after the then Margrave and later Grand Duke Ludwig had to give up the Ministry of War under pressure from Napoleon . Geusau organized the Baden military system based on the French model, although he resigned from this office on September 17, 1808 and became the holder of the Baden Hussar Regiment. In 1811 he was promoted to Grand Chamberlain .

In the sessions of the 1st to 3rd Baden Landtag (1819–1822), Geusau was one of the members of the first chamber of the Baden Assembly of Estates appointed by the Grand Duke .
