Karl Ludwig Erdmann Ferdinand 5th Prince of Carolath-Beuthen , Imperial Count von Schönaich , Baron von Beuthen (born February 14, 1845 in Dresden , † July 6, 1912 in Homburg in front of the height ) was a freelance civil servant and politician.

family

He came from the Silesian noble family Schoenaich-Carolath and was the son of Ludwig Ferdinand Karl Erdmann Alexander Deodatus zu Carolath-Beuthen. He himself was married to Elisabeth Countess von Hatzfeld (1839–1914), Herbert von Bismarck's later partner , in his first marriage since 1866 . The marriage ended in divorce in 1881. The later Admiralty Councilor Paul Felisch reports in his memoirs of an intervention by the Ministry of Justice in the divorce proceedings in favor of Prince zu Carolath-Beuthen:

“Because of this occurrence [...] the prince's marriage was divorced. It is characteristic, by the way, that the princess stipulated in her marriage contract that she would receive an annual payment of - I think I can certainly remember the sum - 10,000 marks in the event of a divorce due to her own fault. In the Ministry of Justice I was now informed that because of these circumstances they wanted to appoint a judge to Carolath who would emphatically safeguard the judicial interests of the prince, all the more so since the difficult majorat conditions also made a confident demeanor necessary. [...] The debate ended with the fact that I was referred to the State Secretary, who congratulated me as Carolath's new magistrate. "

Karl and Elisabeth had a daughter:

  • Karoline Elisabeth Oktavie Sibylla Margarete (* May 17, 1867 - September 21, 1911) ⚭ October 24, 1894 Count Hans von Königsmarck (* May 5, 1865 - March 9, 1943), son of Carl von Königsmarck

In his second marriage, he was married to Katharina Countess von Reichenbach-Goschütz (born March 10, 1861, † November 9, 1941) from 1886 . The couple had several children:

  • Wanda Maria-Rosa Luise Aline Helene (* February 13, 1887 - February 1, 1968) ⚭ September 22, 1912 Friedrich Karl von der Schulenburg (* July 14, 1881 - August 12, 1918), died at Foucaucourt
  • Katharina Margarete Karoline Friederike (* June 4, 1889; † April 13, 1968) ⚭ Aug 14, 1920 Theodor von Lieres and Wilkau (* January 7, 1877; † December 31, 1937)
  • Hans-Karl Erdmann Ludwig Hugo Heinrich Ferdinand (* August 9, 1892 - September 15, 1933), 6th Prince of Carolath-Beuthen ⚭ April 21, 1920 Irene von Anderten (* January 6, 1897 - October 1, 1948)
