Karl, Duke of Mecklenburg [-Güstrow] (born November 18, 1664 in Güstrow ; † March 15, 1688 ibid), was Hereditary Prince in the Mecklenburg-Güstrow region and son of Gustav Adolf and his wife Magdalene Sibylle, née. Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf , daughter of Friedrich III. .

Life

On August 10, 1687, Karl married Maria Amalia von Brandenburg , daughter of the "Great Elector" Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg in Potsdam . The marriage remained childless. As the last son of his father, he died unexpectedly of the leaves , so that the Mecklenburg-Güstrow line of the Mecklenburg Princely House died out after his father's death (1695). His wife lost her child as a result of this stroke of fate.

His brother-in-law, Duke Adolf Friedrich II , raised claims to the vacant part of the country, but was unable to assert himself. Unclear legal conditions led to a long-standing controversy for the succession to the throne in Mecklenburg, which was settled in 1701 in a Hamburg settlement with a reorganization of the state.
