Body and vehicle construction mechanic

The body and vehicle construction mechanic has been a state-recognized training occupation in Germany since 2003 in accordance with the Vocational Training Act and the Crafts Code .

Duration of training and structure

The training period to become a body and vehicle construction mechanic is usually three and a half years. The training takes place at the training company and vocational school .

It is a profession with specializations. In the third and fourth year of training, the content differs and you can choose between the following subjects.

  1. Body maintenance technology,
  2. Car body engineering as well
  3. Vehicle construction technology

In Austria , car body engineering is an apprenticeship with a duration of 3.5 years. Body construction technicians manufacture, maintain and repair bodies, superstructures and panels for special vehicles (e.g. trucks, refrigerated trucks, fire engines, street cleaning vehicles).

History of origin

The training regulations from 2003 provided for a traditional intermediate examination as well as a conventional final examination , in which the acceptance of the extended journeyman's examination was examined by means of a testing regulation . In 2008 the trial was converted into permanent law after an evaluation of the trial ordinance had come to a positive result. The profession replaces the body and vehicle builder training from 1989.

Work areas

Bodywork and vehicle construction mechanics manufacture body parts and vehicle superstructures. You work in vehicle repair shops or for automobile or commercial vehicle manufacturers. There they manufacture surfaces made of steel , aluminum , magnesium or plastic , paint them and protect them against external influences.

In the field of bodywork maintenance technology, they repair accident vehicles and assess and document damage. You equip or convert cars and trucks with accessories.

If you have chosen the field of body construction technology, you will deepen your qualifications in the design of body shells, body parts or vehicle superstructures. You build prototypes or pilot series , install lifting and loading equipment, air conditioning systems or other accessories, but you can also be involved in the restoration of young timers or old timers .

In the field of vehicle construction technology, they provide special vehicles such. B. for the transport of fuels , garbage or building materials including trailers and semitrailers. However, they also convert existing vehicles for changing areas of application, such as use in road and rail operations .
