The Ariadne-Ragwurz or Karpathos-Ragwurz ( Ophrys ariadnae ) is a species of the genus of the Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ).

features

The Ariadne ragwurz is a perennial tuber geophyte that reaches heights of 10 to 40 centimeters. The scar cavity is 0.1 to 0.2 times as high as the length of the lips , its side walls are straight. The lip is relatively wide at 12 to 16 millimeters, the widest point is in the middle. The lateral lobes are small, curved downwards and lie more or less clearly against the lip. The time is often very branched.

The Ariadne ragwort is similar to Ophrys cretica , but is larger. Her lip is significantly larger than that of Ophrys cretica and has a more varied and complex pattern. There are over 30 different drawings. In the case of plants from Karpathos , the drawing often resembles the Rococo style and is overloaded.

ecology

The Ariadne Ragwurz has two blooming times: plants at altitudes up to 400 meters bloom from the end of January to mid-March, at higher altitudes up to 1100 meters from mid-March to early May. In Crete, plants from the second flowering period have a simpler and darker pattern.

The species is pollinated by a subspecies of the common mourning bee ( Melecta albifrons subsp. Albovaria ).

Occurrence

Ophrys ariadnae occurs in the Cyclades , in central and eastern Crete , on Karpathos , on Rhodes and Samos . It grows in light forests, bushes, olive groves, shrubbery, grasslands, phrygana , cultivated terraces and wasteland at altitudes from sea level to 1100 meters. The locations are mostly dry, sandy and open.

Systematics

Synonyms for Ophrys ariadnae are Ophrys cretica (Vierh.) E. Nelson subsp. karpathensis E.Nelson (valid epithet the rank of the subspecies), Ophrys cretica subsp. naxia E. Nelson , Ophrys cretica subsp. ariadnae (Paulus) H.Kretzschmar and Ophrys kotschyi H.Fleischm. & Soó subsp. ariadnae (Paulus) Faurh.

In Crete, Ophrys ariadnae forms hybrids with Ophrys spruneri , Ophrys bombyliflora , Ophrys mammosa and Ophrys heldreichii .
