Karsten Jaspersen

Karsten Jaspersen (born August 8, 1896 in Kiel , † September 29, 1968 in Plön ) was a German psychiatrist and neurologist .

Live and act

The doctor's son took part in the First World War after graduating from the school and was a member of the Epp Freikorps after the war . He then completed a medical degree at the universities of Munich and Kiel, where he was awarded a Dr. med. received his doctorate . This was followed by his training as a specialist in psychiatry and neurology at the University Neurological Clinic under Oswald Bumke and Emil Kraepelin until 1926 . In 1927 Jaspersen took over the deputy medical management at his father's private institution for the mentally ill Schellhorner Berg in Preetz . From 1929 he was first senior physician and then from 1931 until his retirement in 1960 chief physician of the psychiatric-neurological department of the Sarepta deaconess house of the Bodelschwinghschen Anstalten Bethel in Bielefeld .

Jaspersen had already joined the NSDAP in early May 1931 . He worked as an appraiser for the NSDAP Reich leadership in Munich and as a judge at the Hereditary Health Court and at times the doctor of Martin Bormann . During the T4 campaign, he supported the director of the institution, Fritz von Bodelschwingh, against the Nazi euthanasia in Bethel. He sought in vain colleagues such as Oswald Bumke and Ernst Rüdin for support against the planned measures of Nazi euthanasia and in this context also informed Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen . He reimbursed u. a. A complaint was brought against police officers involved in Operation T4 and refused to fill out the registration forms, as he classified this as aiding and abetting murder . A corresponding intervention with Bormann, whom he personally knew, was unsuccessful. According to his own statements, he resisted because "for me as a National Socialist doctor [...] these measures go directly and decisively against any medical professional opinion".

He was married to the painter Elisabeth Jaspersen (1900–1994), née Rüdel. After their death, the couple were buried at their last place of residence in the Plön Easter Cemetery.
