Carousel ( Körhinta ) by Zoltán Fábri is one of the most famous films in Hungarian film history . The content of the film, shot in 1955, corresponds to the propaganda clichés of Stalinism . Fábri's direction and the bold camera work as well as the charm of the then very young leading actress Mari Törőcsik made the film one of the most acclaimed films at the 9th Cannes International Film Festival in 1956.

content

Mari Pataki, the daughter of a wealthy farmer who has left the newly founded agricultural cooperative, falls in love with the young cooperative member Máté Biró. But your father has other plans. “Country marries country” is how he formulates his archaic philosophy, and he has chosen a large farmer as the future husband for his daughter. The young lovers enjoy the intoxicating charm of the eponymous (chain) carousel at a village festival, but the brutal logic of the father initially seems to prevail. On the occasion of the wedding, however, Máté provokes a scandal by dancing an endless csárdás with the bride, whose swirling circles take up the visual motif of the carousel ride. Everything points to a dramatic and tragic end, but in the end reason triumphs: the lovers are allowed to find each other, and the representatives of the "old days" have to take note of their defeat.

Reviews
